ASU student from Gilbert earns recognition for PSA

Arizona State University student Emma Klarin from Gilbert was a winner in USAID’s annual PSAid contest designed to amplify the importance of monetary donations when helping international disaster relief efforts.

College students from across the country participated. The result is new public service announcementsUSAID will use to help communicate that in times of international disaster, cash is the best way Americans can help.

When disasters strike, Americans are eager to help but most don’t realize that material donations — like food, water and clothing — can hinder relief efforts by creating logistical and other challenges, according to USAID.

Cash donations, on the other hand, allows humanitarian organizations to directly purchase what is needed on the ground to help people affected by disasters without overwhelming local infrastructure.

A panel of experts from the fields of humanitarian assistance, communications and design served as volunteer judges: Oktay Dogramaci, former vice president of PayPal Giving, CTO and co-founder of MissionFish; Hillary Hoffower, editor and writer; Jeff Odom, director of digital marketing for IndyCar; Gretel Truong, producer; and Marcia Wong, deputy assistant to the administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.

Previous winning PSAs have reached over 1 billion people and have been in more than 150 media markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta.

All winning entries can be viewed at PSAid.org.
