Mesa launches Youth Climate Action Fund, offers up to $5K in grants for climate projects

Mesa Mayor John Giles announced that the Mesa Youth Climate Action Fund is open and will begin accepting applications on June 1.

The program is open to young people ages 15-24 who reside in or attend school in Mesa. Participants can apply to earn up to $5,000 in funding for design and implementation of projects that address climate action goals in Mesa such as heat mitigation, clean air, water stewardship and increasing Mesa’s tree canopy. The application deadline is July 31.

A total of $50,000 is available for the city to distribute to applicants, provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund.

“The most exciting thing about this initiative is that it is entirely youth-led,” Mayor Giles said in a release. “We appreciate the investment in our community by Bloomberg Philanthropies and we welcome the opportunity to work closely with the next generation on projects that lead us toward a more sustainable future.”

“Climate change is an all-hands-on-deck challenge, and it’s critical that young people – who have the most at stake – help lead the way,” Michael R. Bloomberg, UN special envoy on climate ambition and solutions and 108th mayor of New York City, said in a release. “This new fund will help mayors mobilize and empower tomorrow’s leaders to take action today.”
