Five Mesa students recently received $3,000 scholarships from Desert Financial Credit Union.

The scholarship program through Desert Financial Foundation gives community service scholarships for high school seniors who volunteer in their local communities as well as adult learners scholarships for adults 25 or older who are pursuing certificates or degrees.

According to a press release, nearly 250 Arizona students applied. A total of 60 scholarships were awarded for a total of $192,000 in scholarship money. Five of those students were from the Mesa area.

Nicholas Leitch from Red Mountain High School and Bentley Bagley from Westwood High School each received $3,000 community service scholarships. Gabriel Johnson from NAU, Jordan Hodges from ASU and Juliana Martinez from the University of Arizona Global Campus all received $3,000 adult learning scholarships.

The five Mesa students are all working toward a larger goal in their education. Leitch plans to attend ASU in the fall, while Bagley plans to study business management at Arizona. Johnson is working toward a master’s in nursing, while Hodges is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical studies and Martinez is earning a master’s of business administration.

“We are proud to have given away more than $1 million in scholarships to high school seniors and adult learners in the past eight years,” Jeff Meshey, Desert Financial Foundation vice-chair, said in the release. “An educated workforce increases economic opportunity for everyone in our community – which is why supporting education has been a top priority at Desert Financial since its founding 85 years ago.”
