Owen: Voting to approve $20M bond for Apache Junction Unified School District

Posted

I have lived and worked in Apache Junction for the last 35 years. I cannot remember the last time a school bond was passed for us.

Why are our schools failing? Why is our population in decline? Perhaps it’s because we’ve never invested in our schools so people are going elsewhere.

Our scores are low in math and reading? Of course they are because no one believes they are important enough to invest in.

Maybe if the schools had better tools to help our students like neighboring districts do, and paid a competitive salary in order to attract distinguished teachers, our scores would go up and our enlistment numbers as well.

Like I have every year since I’ve been old enough to vote, I will vote “yes” for our schools and “yes” on the bond. Hopefully one day enough people in this city will believe enough in our children to give them a fighting chance.
