Three people are in the race for the District 1 seat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, but only the Republican side will have a primary contest to see who represents the southeast Valley.

Three in race for Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in District 1

Three people are in the race for the District 1 seat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, but only the Republican side will have a primary contest to see who represents the southeast Valley.

Current District 1 Supervisor Jack Sellers will face off against Mark Stewart on the Republican side. Joel Navarro is unopposed on the Democratic side.

Joel Navarro is a member of the Tempe City Council seeking a seat on the Board of Supervisors for District 1.

Navarro, a Democrat, has served on the Tempe council since 2008 and won reelection three more times. He has served with the Maricopa Association of Governments, the National League of Cities, the Hispanic Elected Local Officials and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

He grew up in Tempe, was an Eagle Scout and attended Phoenix College and Mesa Community College before attending New Mexico State University on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1991. He also has a bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University.

He has been involved in the community through coaching and mentoring, including 13 years as an assistant football coach at Marcos de Niza High School.

Jack Sellers is the incumbent member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for District 1.

Sellers, a Republican, was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2020 after being appointed to the seat in 2019. Prior to the appointment, Sellers served for two terms on the Chandler City Council.

Sellers’ service has included serving as chairman of the State Transportation Board and the Maricopa Association of Governments Transportation Policy Committee. He also has positions with the Greater Phoenix Economic Council International Leadership Council, the Arizona Mexico Commission and more.

Sellers is a proponent of “intelligent infrastructure development” and looking to expand the area’s transportation network with an extension of Proposition 400.

Mark Stewart is currently a member of the Chandler City Council and is seeking a switch of seats by running for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Stewart, a Republican, was elected to the Chandler council the first time in 2016 and reelected in 2020. He has been a city resident since 2001 after he and his family relocated from the Midwest.

During his time on council, Stewart has served with various Valley groups and organizations, including the Maricopa Association of Governments Transportation Policy Committee, the East Valley Partnership executive leadership team and board of directors, and worked with the National League of Cities and Towns.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University, and has been involved in the local community prior to running for Chandler council.
