Japanese cuisine vending machine open in Tempe through March 31

A “revolutionary” dining experience has opened in Tempe at Fujiya Market, 1335 W University Dr., offering convenient and authentic Japanese meals with just the push of a button.

Taste of Japan announced the launch of a state-of-the-art Japanese cuisine vending machine, available exclusively at Fujiya Market through March 31, a press release explained.

This vending machine, called Frozen Yatai, debuted at the prestigious Japanese Consulate VIP Reception on Feb. 23 in Arizona, marking a significant milestone in culinary technology, the release detailed. Developed by SandenVendo America, a Japanese vending machine manufacturer, this cashless system accepts transactions through card and Apple Pay.

True to the essence of Japanese culinary tradition, all dishes available in the vending machine are crafted using rice sourced directly from Japan. Unlike ordinary rice, this specially selected variety maintains its quality even after microwaving, ensuring a delightful dining experience without the risk of becoming mushy.

Diners will have five bento-style dishes to choose from: chicken teriyaki, a tempura bowl, an eel rice bowl, a spicy tuna salad roll and a plant-based meat bowl.

Frozen Yatai is an example of the growing partnership between Taste of Japan and California Rice Center. Together, the two organizations are introducing quality Japanese products to the Arizona market, such as the rice used in each dish offered by the vending machine, the release explained.

"Not only does it provide unparalleled convenience and quality, but it also serves as a testament to the burgeoning trade relationship between Arizona and Japan," Rocky Yoneyama, a spokesperson for Taste of Japan, stated in the release.

Each meal, priced between $11 and $13, offers a complete dining experience, freshly frozen and ready to be heated in the microwave in three to four minutes. All meals are provided by California Rice Center.

"This vending machine represents our commitment to promoting Japanese rice consumption and fostering cultural exchange through gastronomy," Yoneyama stated.
