The Sun City West Tennis Club recently wrapped up the 36th annual “Swing Into Spring” senior charity tennis tournament. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the club, making it one of the first clubs in Sun City West, and the Tournament is an annual highlight, attracting local players as well as those from other states.
The tournament is open to players age 50 and older. Mens, women’s and mixed doubles are played at the 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 levels, with 124 players, 123 matches, 267 sets and 2,064 games of tennis played.
The tournament started March 20 and concluded March 24 at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center Tennis Complex. A BBQ was provided for dinner on Wednesday night to all sponsors, players and volunteers.
The tournament was presented by Statz Insurance Agency for the second straight year. Additional sponsors included Ray’s Rackets, John Braden Edward Jones, Saini Smiles Dentistry and Gayla & Ron Brown Hague Partners/72 Sold Real Estate.
“A huge thank you is in order to our sponsors. Without them, it would be a challenge to make this community event happen,” said SIS match director George Orchard.
The tournament was able to provide donations to the Sun City West Posse and Sun City West PRIDES in the amount of $4,000 for each.
In addition, a 50/50 raffle was held over the five days and collected $1,230 in raffle ticket sales. Fifty percent of the ticket sales ($615) was donated to PASS (Programs For After School Success), a Phoenix nonprofit organization that teaches under-served children the sport of tennis and more. The Sun City West Tennis Club has been a supporter of PASS for the last three years. The other 50% was divided amongst three winning tickets. One of the winning tickets decided to donate $100 of their winnings to PASS, making their donation $715 also.
“Our club members not only came out to play, but many, many volunteered to make this another great event for Sun City West and our community,” said Tournament Director Jolene Piaskowski.
