Xavier College Preparatory students raised more than half a million canned goods for St. Vincent de Paul.
The all-girls’ Catholic high school, located at 4710 N. 5th St., in Phoenix, donated 550,740 cans, which broke their own school record for goods donated. According to a press release, the initial goal was to collect 10,000 cans.
The effort raised more than $54,000 in cash donations alone. National Honor Society president, senior Emily Alaimo, spearheaded the successful program.
Each year students donate more than 30,000 hours doing volunteer work and community service as part of Xavier’s Christian Service Program. Many activities are designed by students where they see a need to fulfill.
The school’s National Honor Society started its canned food drive to benefit St. Vincent de Paul in the 1990s.
