Wallace voted girls athlete of year

West Valley Preps

Nearly 1,900 votes were cast in 12 days for the West Valley Preps Girls Athlete of the Year Award.

Deer Valley senior soccer goalie Hayden Wallace picked up 805 votes to claim the award.

The Skyhawks’ four-year starter will play for Grand Canyon University next year. She was the West Valley Preps' girls soccer player of the year and was chosen as the first team all conference by 5A coaches.

Liberty senior sprinter Asiah Fields placed second with 449 votes. She won her seconds straight state 400-meter crown and added a gold in the 4x100-meter relay.

Fields is deciding among 10 Division I NCAA programs to attend.

Centennial sophomore volleyball star and basketball player Ashley Lifgren finished third with 162 votes, just edging out Willow Canyon junior soccer and track ace Alison Veloz, 162 votes to 153.

Lifgren is the West Valley Preps volleyball player of the year and has already committed to play for Grand Canyon.

Voting for the West Valley Preps Boys Athlete has begun here and will continue until July 1. The following 10 athletes are the candidates:

• Michael Huss, Northwest Christian (soccer)

• Jonathan Ornelas, Kellis (baseball)

• Miles Nuessle, Liberty (wrestling)

• James Hansen, Sunrise Mountain (soccer, football, volleyball)

• Matthew Liberatore, Mountain Ridge (baseball)

• Damaria Norris, Cactus (football)

• Tarik Sutkovic, Ironwood (wrestling)

• Zidane Thomas, Centennial (football)

• Max Weed, Shadow Ridge (swimming)
