Indiana-based Trine University will cease operations at its Peoria campus June 12, officials said.

Director of Communications James Tew said in an  email the school did not accept any tuition for any semesters past this spring, and that most students at the Peoria campus will complete their degrees by June 12.

“Any other credits can be applied toward the completion of a degree online or at our main campus in Angola, Ind.,” Mr. Tew said in an email.

He would offer no information as to why the campus will stop operations and said no additional information would be released at this time.

Trine University 14100 N. 83rd Ave., Suite 100 began offering classes in 2013.

The university offers bachelor’s degrees in engineering,  business, arts and sciences as well as masters degrees in five areas.

The university’s opening marked a push toward fulfilling Peoria’s goal of fostering high-tech, innovation-based industries within the city. Attracting higher education to the Peoria has been a top priority of the city council since 2010, when the first Economic Development Implementation Strategy was adopted, which provides  a  road  map  for achieving  the  economic development goals of the city.

Last August, Huntington University, a Christian college also based in Indiana, opened a 30,000 square foot location near the Peoria Sports Complex that offers bachelor’s degree programs in digital media arts.

Peoria spokeswoman Jennifer Stein said in an emailed statement Peoria values higher education and the opportunities it brings to the city’s residents.

“The partnerships and relationships we have developed are important to our community,” she said. “We wish Trine University continued success.”

Founded in 1884, Trine University offers more than 35 degree programs on its main campus in Angola, Ind.,  as well as online and at regional campuses and education centers throughout Indiana and Michigan.
