Tempe officer shot, suspect killed during traffic stop

A Tempe officer was wounded Tuesday night, and the suspect who police say shot him is dead.
The shooting happened about 9 p.m. Oct. 1 when officers attempted to arrest a suspect near College and Curry who was linked to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
During a traffic stop, the suspect opened fire, striking the officer, police said. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer suffered a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to a hospital. He has been released, police stated Wednesday morning in a release.
“Every time an officer is hurt while serving and protecting our city, it resonates throughout our department and the community we serve,” Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy said.
“We are grateful his injuries were not more serious.”
The Mesa Police Department is conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
