Law enforcement officials arrested a Sun City West man Wednesday evening after he barricaded himself in his vehicle in Wittmann, according to a release.

The Surprise Police Department identified the man as Gregory Rodvelt, 65 of Sun City West.

On April 5 at about 3:30 p.m., a person contacted Surprise police to report a man who had allegedly displayed his firearm at them near Grand Avenue and Bell Road. The victim provided officers with a description of the man and his vehicle, including the license plate number.

Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Grand Avenue south of Center Street in Wittmann, about 15 miles from the initial incident.

According to police, the suspect was uncooperative and refused to surrender to the responding officers. He also told police he had a weapon in the vehicle. Police established telephone communication with the man after securing the scene and rerouting traffic on Grand Avenue.

While negotiators attempted to reach a resolution with the suspect, SWAT officers maneuvered into and obtained a position of advantage on the man's vehicle. At about 6:15 p.m., Rodvelt surrendered to the officers without further incident or injury to the suspect, the responding officers or civilians who were close by in the area.

Aiding Surprise police were the department's SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team, a police helicopter and a SWAT team from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Rodvelt will be booked into the Maricopa 4th Avenue Jail and faces charges including disorderly conduct, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

The information in this report was provided by Sgt. Norm Owens of the Surprise Police Department.
