Sun City Friends book sales going global

Friends of the Sun City Libraries book sales will be going global.
The group’s board of director’s is moving forward with a program to offer selected books from its bookstore, Books Around the Corner, 16828 N. 99th Ave., on Amazon and eBay. The program is expected to be up and running by June 1.

“We just have a few things to put in place and we will be ready to go,” said Tim Geiger, Friends board member and online sales coordinator.
Selected books will be available through an Amazon store the Friends will have through the sales website and others will be put on eBay. A link to Amazon, and possibly eBay, will be included on the Friends website, www.suncitylibraryfriends.org, to make book searches easier for book shoppers, according to Mr. Geiger.
Books for online sales will be selected by Mary Anne McDonald, Books Around the Corner manager. Criteria for selection could include the condition of the book and its potential value, she said.
“This is a vehicle for us to maximize the value of the donations we receive,” Mr. Geiger said of the online sales program.
The Friends board has discussed the online sales for several months. The online sales will not replace, but rather supplement, the group’s multiple sales at Sun City venues throughout the year. Books Around the Corner will also continue to operate.
The Friends received a donation of bookshelves earlier this year that will be used by Mr. Geiger at his home to store books selected for online sales. When orders are placed, he will package it and send it to the buyer.
Online sales is another in a series of steps taken by the Friends to broaden their reach on the Internet. The group launched a Facebook page and it has a steadily increasing amount of likes, according to Mr. Geiger.
“I boosted our Facebook announcement about the Fairway book sale and it reached 1,500 people, although the page has fewer than 50 likes so far,” he explained. “One woman saw the announcement after the sale and called to say she wished she had seen it sooner. So we are reaching more people.”
The Friends website has also seen a steady increase in traffic, although April saw a slight dip, according to Marcia Davis, Friends board president.
“That was our first drop since we started keeping track of it,” she said. “But the interest in the site remains strong.”
