A 34-year-old woman has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her 13-month-old child, who died of a fentanyl overdose, authorities said.
Gabrielle Marshall is in jail for 11 ½ years followed by 10 years of probation, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
On Sept. 19, 2022, Scottsdale Police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a child who had ingested fentanyl, an MCAO release stated.
Marshall was the only adult in the home on that day “and admitted that her child had gotten into her opiates.
“Officers found drug paraphernalia in various places throughout Marshall’s home. The child was cold to the touch, had been administered Narcan, and pronounced deceased at the hospital,” according to the release.
Marshall pleaded guilty in April second-degree murder and child abuse.
“Losing a child is an immeasurable agony, but knowing that because of your addiction your child is gone is something this mother will have to live with for the rest of her life,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.
