Scottsdale church announces holiday events

As Christmas approaches, Desert Hills Presbyterian Church will celebrate the season with a variety of holiday-themed events this December. From a festive and interactive choir performance to events designed to support those grieving the loss of a loved one, all events will take place at the church’s campus, 34605 N. Tom Darlington Road.

The DHPC music department will present a celebration of seasonal sounds with a performance 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, by the chancel and handbell choirs, joined by orchestral and other small ensembles. Held in the church sanctuary, this event will invite the audience to take part in the ringing and singing, including some sing-along choruses from Handel’s Messiah.

Also on Dec. 3, DHPC will host a GriefShare “Surviving the Holidays” workshop 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the church’s conference room. Designed to help those grieving the loss of a loved one navigate the holiday season, this free seminar will offer group support and practical, actionable strategies for coping with holiday traditions, social events and the range of emotions that this time of year tends to elicit. Featuring video interviews with counselors and grief experts, a group discussion and a Holiday Survival Guide to take home, attendees can discover tools and support to help them face the season and discover hope for the future.

As another way to provide comfort and hope for those experiencing grief or loss, DHPC will host a Candle Lighting Service of Reflection 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, in the Fellowship Center. Recognizing the dual nature of the holidays as times of pain and healing, this service aims to assist attendees in embracing and trusting the new experiences they face.
