From true crime stories to celebrating local fashion icons, the Scottsdale Public Library has announced the upcoming topics for its Hometown Happy Hour events.

Hometown Happy Hour is a free public event that details unique and entertaining stories about the community. The talks are held at various library locations throughout the city.

Registration isn’t required, but space is limited. Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

Upcoming, Hometown Happy Hour topics will be:

Stories from the Files of the Scottsdale Police Department — 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Mustang Library. Citizen Advisor and local history raconteur, Bruce Wall, will share some compelling local true crime stories from the case files of the Scottsdale Police department. If you think nothing notable happens in our fair city, you will be surprised.

Meet the Poet — 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Civic Center Library. Scottsdale’s Poet Laureate, Lois Roma-Deeley will read from her new book, Like Water in the Palm of My Hand, and talk with the audience about her creative process and the influence of place, especially Arizona, on her work. Roma-Deeley has received numerous accolades for her poetry and her teaching, and has read her work nationally at colleges, universities, museums and galleries, arts organizations, and community centers.

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Scottsdale Historic Preservation Program — 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Appaloosa Library. Join award-winning Scottsdale architect Douglas B. Sydnor for a presentation on Scottsdale history and preservation on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the program, which works to increase public awareness of Scottsdale’s heritage while identifying historic and cultural resources.

Scottsdale as a Mecca for the Fabulous and Fashionable of the Southwest — 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Mustang Library. Join Scottsdale community historian Joan Fudala for a walk down a visual, virtual runway of Scottsdale fashions throughout the city’s history. The photo-rich presentation shows how Scottsdale clothing and accessories have evolved from farm utilitarian to fabulous. Learn more about why Scottsdale was known as the Fashion Capital of the Southwest during the 1950s and 1960s with a thriving fashion industry in the Fifth Avenue area and weekly fashion shows.
