Saturday municipal court comes to order Nov. 5 in Chandler

Posted

Chandler will experiment next month by having a Saturday morning municipal court session with walk-in services for dealing with outstanding warrants, traffic tickets and other civil and criminal cases.

“Our goal for Saturday court is to provide additional ways for the public to have access to the court,” Alicia Skupin, presiding city magistrate, said.

The court, 200 E. Chicago St., will be open from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Nov. 5. No appointment is necessary, according to a city release, and Spanish interpreters will be available.

The court has partnered with Arizona Department of Transportation’s motor vehicle services division to offer limited court and motor vehicle services.

Judges, court staff and state transportation representatives will be available to address outstanding warrants, traffic tickets, defaults, resolving suspended driver’s licenses, payment plans, arraignments, MVD matters and other civil and criminal issues, according to the release.

“By providing hours on a Saturday morning, we are hoping to eliminate some of the barriers that may prevent defendants from resolving their cases during traditional business hours,” Skupin said.

“As a court, we continually work to find ways to better serve the members of our community and increase access to justice.”

This is the first time that Chandler is offering Saturday court. If it is well-attended, court officials said, additional Saturday court dates may be added.
