Police fatally shoot man outside gym in Apache Junction

Officers responded to reports of people camping illegally outside Planet Fitness

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating after police fatally shot an 82-year-old Florence man outside of a gym in Apache Junction.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. Sunday, March 8 at the Planet Fitness near Apache Trail and Meridian Road.

According to Apache Junction police, officers responded because several people were illegally camping in the gym’s parking lot.

Responding officers encountered a man wearing a holstered handgun.

Police said the man failed to follow verbal commands to not touch his weapon and quickly pulled the handgun from his holster. Apache Junction officers fired their weapons, striking the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His named hasn't been released.

Police said the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while Arizona Department of Public Safety investigates the shooting.
