Three residents honored for courage

Scottsdale Firefighters Association held its annual Behind the Flames Scottsdale Firefighter Charities Dinner on Sept. 24.

This year’s event took place at STK Steakhouse in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale.

Jaysha McClendon, Debra Ann Byrd and Billy Mayfair were honored at the dinner, which pays tribute to the bravery and resilience of Scottsdale Firefighters and three extraordinary Valley residents who have shown courage in the face of challenges.

McClendon from Scottsdale became a national champion in gymnastics at 12-years-old. She won the USA Gymnastics Developmental National Championships in her level and received gold on the uneven bars and silver on the balance beam. Her goal is to one day become an Olympian.

Byrd is an award-winning classically trained actress and producer, who is recognized for her significant contributions to theater and her unwavering commitment to promoting diversity.

Billy Mayfair is an accomplished professional golfer with five PGA Tour victories who has triumphed over personal adversities, including a battle with testicular cancer in 2006 and a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in 2019. Mayfair supports individuals and families affected by spectrum-related disorders through a nonprofit foundation.
