Phoenix plans Tres Rios burn

The city of Phoenix and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management will hold a prescribed burn for the Tres Rios wetlands on Wednesday.
The burn, which is subject to appropriate weather conditions and other factors, will take place near where 91st Avenue nears the Salt River. The road will be closed 8 a.m.-4 p.m. from the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant north gate to Baseline Road.
A plume of smoke likely will be visible from the burn, officials said.
The burn is an attempt to reduce vegetation and continue to help restore the riparian habitat. City officials hope the burn will be more succeswsufl than mechanical means that were used to keep vegetation from being overgrown.
Under an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the city may conduct prescribed burns from October through February. The burn will target a 50-acre plot known as Tres Rios Flow Regulating Wetland 2 cell.
Fire crews from Phoenix will be there to put out the burn.
