Phoenix arson suspect in custody after fire damages 12 vehicles

A man is in custody after a fire that damaged 12 vehicles in Phoenix was ruled arson.

Phoenix arson investigators had been looking to identify and talk with a person of interest after around a dozen vehicles were damaged in a fire at an apartment complex Tuesday morning near 15th Avenue and Camelback Road.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the location, where 12 vehicles under a parking struck became engulfed in flames , as seen in video released by the agency.

About 30 firefighters extinguished the fire and kept damage to the apartments to a minimum. No one appeared to have been displaced.

"The fire was so intense that the apartment building 50 feet to the west also caught fire," Phoenix Fire stated.

Most of the vehicles involved were completely destroyed.

Phoenix authorities released a photo of a person of interest in an arson investigation from May 28, 2019. A suspect has been arrested. (Submitted photo)

The fire also burned through power lines, which provided an additional challenge as crews continued control of the fire.

Phoenix Fire determined the incident was due to arson, and investigators released a photo of a person of interest Wednesday morning.

On Thursday morning, a citizen in the area of 15th and Highland avenues, not to far from the arson scene, spotted Francis Klettke, 23, sleeping on a bus stop bench. The citizen called police, who then arrested him without incident.

He is in the process of being booked into jail for arson.

"This was arrest was made possible due to the quick work of the Phoenix Fire Investigations Task Force gathering evidence, and getting information out to Phoenix PD patrol officers," the fire agency stated. "Media releasing the picture of the suspect was also instrumental in a tip to officers this morning."

Officials do not know if Mr. Klettke is connected to any arson-related crimes, but he was the suspect in the shooting death of his father back in 2016 at a campsite in Yavapai County, according to a report that year by the Associated Press.
