Peoria City Council elects vice mayor, mayor pro tem

Posted

The Peoria City Council has elected new officers for the board.

In 2024, Jon Edwards will serve as vice mayor and Jennifer Crawford as mayor pro tem.

At the public meeting Jan. 16, Councilmember Bill Patena nominated Edwards for vice mayor, which was seconded by Councilmember Michael Finn. The vote passed unamously.

Subsequently, Finn nomnated Crawford for mayor pro tem, which Edwards seconded. The vote passed 6-1, with Councilmember Denette Dunn dissenting.

Elections for these seats are held on the first council meeting of the calendar year. These actions are taken by city council pursuant to the city charter.

The vice mayor serves in absence of the mayor and the mayor pro tem serves in absence of both the mayor and vice mayor.

Dunn was the former vice mayor and Edwards was the former mayor pro tem.

The mayor is the chairman of the council, presides over its meetings, and is recognized as head of the city government for all purposes, according to the city charter.

The mayor has no regular administrative duties, but on behalf of the council, confers and advises with the city manager to insure that council programs and policies are being carried out in full.

The mayor also governs the city by proclamation during times of riot, civil insurrection, major disaster and times of great public danger, the charter says.
