Get a glimpse of Sun Cities history

A group of women got a glimpse of Sun Cities history during a recent private tour of the Sun Cities Del Webb Museum, 10801 W. Oakmont Drive, Sun City.

Members of Chapter CG of P.E.O. had a private tour of the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum and were impressed with what they saw and learned. Some members — including Diane Christenson, Peggy Doe, Gretchen Widner, Jeannie Sophussen and Joyce Bowlby — wore hats and gloves as a salute to the 1960s era model home museum.

The museum is owned and operated by the Sun Cities Area Historical Society. Private tours are available for groups of six or more weekday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Groups of 24 or less can conduct a meeting outdoors on the McMillin Terrace or 12 can conduct a meeting indoors. A docent will take 12 at a time, six in the Sundome Jr. Theatre and six to tour then reverse the groups. Donations are appreciated for these events.

To reserve, call 623-974-2568 weekday mornings. Regular museum hours are 1-4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays 1-4 p.m.; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays through March and 1-4 p.m. through May 15.

The museum is located in one of five first model homes available for prospective homebuyers when the Del Webb Corp. was preparing to open the community Jan. 1, 1960. The museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There is no admission charge to tour the museum, but donations are gladly accepted. The historical society is operated solely on community contributions.
