O’Shei: Independents and moderates take note

Posted

The U.S. has thrived as a moderate democracy for over 200 years but now we are suffering under an economy that only benefits the wealthy, climate change is getting worse by the day and we have an out-of-control debt, a failing immigration system and an expensive and lousy health care system. And nothing is being done by our government to fix anything because of gridlock.

The cause of all of this is that over the past three decades those in the ideological middle have lost almost all of their political voice, even though moderates now make up over 35% of the population and Independents now make up almost 50% of our population. The U.S. is one of only a few countries in the world to have a two-party political system and it no longer works due to the advent of extremism.

This coming election is not only one of the most important and frightening presidential elections in our history, we also have a number of propositions on the ballot which are attempting to keep independents and moderates from ever having a voice in politics here in Arizona. For example, some propositions want to make it increasingly difficult for independents to run for office and for voter ballot initiatives to come into being.

Independents and moderates, please do your research and if you want to make democracy work again in Arizona, vote NO on Propositions 133, 134, 136, and 137. Vote YES on Proposition 140.
