Permanent concrete barriers along the I-17 Improvement Project, including the ones that will separate the flex lanes from the existing southbound lanes, are created using a slipform paving machine, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The machine moves along a pre-set path, adjusting to minor shifts in the landscape to keep the barrier size consistent.

A crew of more than seven workers is required to work on various aspects of creating and placing barriers for the Interstate 17 improvement project, state transportation officials said.

Drivers will not face any new restrictions along Valley freeways this weekend but need to be aware of existing work zones, including along Interstate 17, state transportation officials said.
The road work reprieve will begin Friday afternoon, Aug. 30, and continue until early Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
However, drivers heading north from the Valley should:
Allow extra travel time and use caution when approaching and traveling through the work zone for the I-17 improvement project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point rest area.
Be aware State Route 89A north of Sedona and south of Flagstaff remains restricted at the switchbacks south of the Oak Creek Vista scenic overlook due to an “ongoing rockfall mitigation project,” ADOT officials said. Temporary portable signals are being used to move traffic through the area one direction at a time. Motorists should be prepared for delays and consider using I-17 and SR 179 as detour routes between Sedona and Flagstaff (either direction).
