Local art instructors lead diverse classes geared for all ages, levels of experience

Pick up a paint brush, get your hands dirty with clay or learn how to make a necklace as the Sonoran Arts League Studio plans its new fall class schedule.

With dozens of classes to choose from, residents of all ages and levels of experience can tap into their creativity by attending a one-day workshop or a series of classes. The fall classes begin Friday, Sept. 6 and run through Sunday, Dec. 15.

Crystal White, the League’s manager of education programs, said the nonprofit’s art classes offer a unique opportunity to engage in creativity and self-expression.

“By taking classes with us, you not only gain access to expert instruction and diverse artistic techniques, but you will also support a community-driven initiative dedicated to enriching lives through art,” she said.

Jeanne Anne Baughman, of Cave Creek, has been teaching ceramics at the League’s Studio for nearly two years. A former art teacher in the Cave Creek Unified School District, Baughman has been passionate about creating nature-inspired handmade pottery for more than 30 years.

“I love teaching, and it’s so rewarding to see people’s expressions when their pieces come out of the kiln,” Baughman said. “My classes at the League Studio are during the day and in the evening to accommodate those who work. We offer a chance to throw pottery on the wheel or create a unique piece of hand-built pottery.”

Karen Michaels learned about the Sonoran Arts League art classes when she moved to Cave Creek more than three years ago. She had been an oil painter for several years but was curious about the ceramics class for beginners.

“I enrolled in the class and started my adventures with clay,” Michaels said. “I have been taking ceramic classes ever since, including wheel throwing and hand building. People are very welcoming.”

The fall classes range from life drawing, oil painting, acrylics, pastels, watercolors and mixed media collage to pottery on the wheel, ceramic garden totems, jewelry enameling, and many other creative subjects. This year’s roster of classes also includes an expanded list of classes for children and teens.

Fees for classes start at $25 per hour of instruction. The League also provides free art classes for veterans every Thursday through Dec. 26.

The Sonoran Arts League Studio is located at 7100 E. Cave Creek Road, Suite 144, in Cave Creek’s Stagecoach Village.
