Nerf gun play ends with 13-year-old dead in Phoenix

An 18-year-old accidentally shot a 13-year-old Sunday after firing a weapon as the two were playing with Nerf guns, Phoenix police said.

The older teen has been arrested and faces manslaughter and weapons charges, police said.

Officers were called to a stabbing about 1:15 p.m. April 7 at an apartment complex near 7th Avenue and Mountain View Road where they found Earlric Reynolds, 13, with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, police said.

The suspect was arrested and faces manslaughter and weapons charges.

Adolfo Villalva, 18, told officers he had accidentally shot Reynolds, according to a release.

Detectives conducted interviews and reviewed evidence.

“They learned Villalva and Reynolds were playing with Nerf guns when Villalva pulled out a real gun and mistakenly fired it at Reynolds,” the release stated.

“Villalva and other witnesses moved Reynolds to the parking lot of the apartment complex, and Villalva hid the firearm before police arrived.”

The firearm was later recovered, police said

In addition to the manslaughter and weapons charges, Villalva was charged with tampering with evidence, police said.
