MusicaNova Orchestra to bring ‘Mozart The Plagiarist’ work to Phoenix

Valley audience will hear Mozart, Haydn pieces

MusicaNova Orchestra will perform a unique concert, “Mozart The Plagiarist,” this October in Phoenix.

Led by MusicaNova Music Director and Conductor Warren Cohen, the performance features Mozart's “Jupiter Symphony” as well as Joseph Haydn's earlier “Symphony No. 13.” Audiences will be able to compare the two works and hear the irrefutable evidence, according to a MusicaNova press release.

“Mozart The Plagiarist” starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., in Phoenix. Tickets start at $30 and are available at mim.org.

The concert also includes two world premieres.

Alan Belkin wrote his “Viola Concerto” for recent Julliard masters graduate Graham Cohen, who will perform as soloist on the piece. MusicaNova Orchestra Composition Fellow River Sawchyn, named one of "30 promising Canadians under the age of 30,” is writing a piece so new it doesn’t yet have a title, the press release notes. In keeping with the concert’s theme, he promises to borrow melodies and passages from Mozart and Haydn.

Also, Sawchyn and Graham Cohen will join for a hoedown showcasing Canadian and American fiddling techniques.

MusicaNova, a Phoenix-based nonprofit, performs new, neglected, and familiar classical music. Warren Cohen has been music director of the MusicaNova Orchestra since its founding in 2003.
