The Musical Instrument Museum will present ‘Tis the Season: Holidays at MIM this weekend in Phoenix.
On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10, guests will enjoy performances from local acts like Las Palomas del Norte Handbell Ensemble, learn how to play a holiday classic on the luge in a music-making workshop, craft sleigh bells to accompany holiday tunes throughout the weekend, and participate in many other family-friendly activities celebrating holiday traditions from around the world.
On Saturday, Dec. 9, Broadway star Melissa Errico will deliver a night of holiday songs. On Sunday, Dec. 10, the John Jorgenson Quintet will bring a musical experience of gypsy jazz to the intimate performance space.
Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd.
Weekend Features:
Holiday Craft: Sleigh Bells
9 a.m.–4 p.m.: Make your own sleigh bell and play along with the day’s performances.
Photo Booth
9 a.m.–4 p.m.: Have your picture taken in a hands-free photo booth.
Pop-Up Performance: Dickens Carolers
10:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.: Join the Dickens Carolers for a stroll along El Río and listen as they sing spirited seasonal carols.
Gallery Mini-Tours
11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.: Follow junior museum guides on a short, informative tour of MIM’s galleries with a special focus on holiday celebrations from around the world.
Music-Making Workshop
11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.: Join junior museum guides for a family-friendly musical activity that teaches guests to play a fun holiday classic on the luge.
Performance: The Hot Beignets
11:30 a.m.–noon, Saturday: Experience a New Orleans-style holiday with a lively performance by the Hot Beignets.
Performance: Mariachi Rubor
11:30 a.m.–noon, Sunday: Enjoy a medley performed by Mariachi Rubor.
Orchestrion: Holiday Playlist
Noon & 3 p.m.: Enjoy unique versions of familiar holiday tunes as played by MIM’s largest instrument, the orchestrion.
Performance: Kwanzaa Storytelling
12:45–1:30 p.m. Join storyteller and musician Súle Greg Wilson in this participatory exploration of Kwanzaa traditions.
Performance: Las Palomas del Norte Handbell Ensemble
2–2:30 p.m.: Ring in the holidays with this handbell performance.
Performance: Rural Street Klezmer Band
3:15–4 p.m.: Get in the spirit for Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, with this klezmer music performance.
