Mesa CVS slaying ends in arrest

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in the Thursday night killing of a CVS employee, Mesa police said Friday.

Jared Sevey was taken into custody, and police identified the victim Michael Jacobs, 49.

The Mesa Police Department received a call of a possible shooting about 8:10 p.m. Sept. 7 at the CVS Pharmacy at 305 E. Brown.

Officers arrived and found Jacobs with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and later was pronounced dead.

As officers were responding, the caller provided a description of the suspect and the direction he fled.

Detectives at the Real Time Crime Center reviewed cameras in the area and found a person matching the description of the suspect walking across the street from the CVS.

Officers arrived at the northwest corner of Mesa Drive and Brown “and witnessed Jared throwing what appeared to be a gun into the canal,” police said in a release.

Sevey was detained, and authorities said they noticed he had blood on him.

The suspect “made spontaneous statements that he shot” Jacobs, police said, adding officers recovered the gun from the canal.

Detectives learned that the suspect had been in the CVS earlier in the day and had an altercation with the victim about shoplifting.

“While being interviewed, Jared admitted to shooting Michael because he was tired of being bullied and this was the last straw,” the police release stated.

Sevey was booked for first-degree premeditated murder, prohibited possessor and tampering with evidence.
