Maricopa County Attorney reacts to bond set for Tempe sex assault suspect

Posted

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said her office asked that the suspect arrested in a string of sexual and aggravated assaults in Tempe should not be allowed to post bail, but a judge decided Djimon Boggs would be able to post a $1 million cash-only bond.

Boggs, who was arrested on Oct. 14,  is being detained in Maricopa County Jail on two counts of sex crimes, three assault counts and two counts of criminal trespass and burglary, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office website.

The charges stem from a series of incidents over the last month near South Gary Drive and East 8th Street in Tempe, police said.

“While we asked that the suspect be held without any opportunity to post bail, we are hopeful that the $1 million cash-only bond imposed by the Court will be sufficient to protect our community,” Mitchell wrote over the weekend.

Bond serves two purposes, according to Mitchell, including ensuring “that the community remains safe and assures the Court that the accused will appear at future court dates.”

Mitchell said she will continue to seek “appropriately high bonds for those who are accused of endangering the people of Maricopa County.

“We have seen the low bond experiment fail in cities throughout the United States. Its days end at Maricopa County.”
