Man sentenced in deadly San Tan Valley DUI crash

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced in a DUI crash that killed a father and son in San Tan Valley in 2023.

On Monday, Pinal County Superior Court Judge Jason Holmberg sentenced Dillon Shifflett to 16 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed by seven years of supervised probation.

Shifflett pled guilty to manslaughter as a class two dangerous felony, and manslaughter as a class two non-dangerous felony, the Pinal County Attorney’s office stated in a release.

In June 2023, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle collision on Gary Road and Foot Hills Drive in San Tan Valley. Shifflett was identified as the driver of a 2016 GMC Sierra that had slammed into a 2009 Volkswagen minivan making a left turn. The crash killed both occupants of the minivan, a 65-year-old man and his 23-year-old son. The victims’ family said the two had been on their way to a gym, the release stated.

During the investigation, witnesses stated that Shifflett was driving "super fast," with a speed of roughly 90 miles-per-hour. The posted speed limit was 35 miles-per-hour. A blood draw showed Shifflett's BAC to be 0.116 and that there was THC in his system, the release stated.

"This is yet another example of the tragic consequences that occur when choosing to drive impaired," stated Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer in the release. "My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the victims' family, and I hope they can begin the healing process."

During sentencing, two of the victims' family members addressed the court and detailed how their lives had forever changed, going from a tight-knit family of six to four. They remembered the victims' kind and funny spirit.

One family member told the court, "We will never feel whole again," adding, "I am in disbelief that this is my life and my reality."
