As a proud Arizona conservative, I did not support the legalization of cannabis when it came up for a vote last year. The Arizona voters, however, sent a loud-and-clear message, and the measure passed. Now that is here, and here to stay, we need the federal government to take the next step.
The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act will go a long way toward making sure we go forward responsibly. It will help create a nationwide framework for strong and appropriate regulation. It will create a strong national licensing program and help solve the problems around illicit funding and bring the industry into the banking system.
The industry needs to be regulated, much as we regulate alcohol and tobacco, to protect consumers and address the surrounding issues such as driving under the influence, youth use, substance abuse and many others.
The federal government needs to take positive action by passing this legislation. They cannot continue to close their eyes and hope it goes away.
