Sun City West American Legion Post 94 honored and awarded seven West View High School student delegates their Certificates of Completion for the 2023 Girls and Boys State Programs at the group's Oct. 5 general membership meeting,

Post 94 sponsored these seven energetic and dedicated students, who successfully completed the intense Girls State at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the Boys State Programs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff during this past summer.

Each student delegates gave a brief description of their personal highlights of the program and its lasting effects on their lives.

Boys State and Girls State programs are national American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary programs that have been developed to offer youths a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part and commensurately responsible, for the character and success of the government.

The programs are a week-long education in citizenship offered to those high school students demonstrating exemplary Leadership qualities.

Also, during the near standing room-only meeting, the membership benefited from a dynamic and informative presentation given by Rick Krieberg, founder and executive director of Veterans Affinity.

Krieberg is a retired command sergeant major of the U.S. Army.  The mission of Veterans Affinity is to assist senior veterans in getting the care needed and the cenefits they have earned.

It collaborates with the Veterans Administration and community care partners to provide assistance to our most vulnerable Veterans, especially Vietnam War veterans - ensuring we leave no Veteran behind.

Krieberg was accompanied by Rick Vargas, operations officer, and his wife, Susan Vargas, program director, both veterans, who answered questions and assisted some veterans with current issues after the meeting.

Sun City West Post 94 meets monthly at 10 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month Sun City West Foundation Grand Canyon room, 14465 W. R .H.  Johnson Blvd. All veterans are welcome to attend and to consider joining the post, which exists to support all veterans.
