KRUV Radio Sun in Peoria searches for new on-air talent

Posted

KRUV Radio Sun is auditioning for on-air talent.

Originating from sound booths at Recorded Recreational Reading for the Blind (RRRB) in Peoria, KRUV is a 24/7 digital radio station operated by unpaid volunteers. It is a nonprofit whose mission is to record reading material for the vision-impaired. KRUV supports that mission through community engagement and promoting awareness about vision issues.

KRUV’sprogram content, currently as diverse as its listener base, is determined by Program Director John Schumacher, whose vision is to expand programming content to appeal to an even wider audience.

For example, adding a weekly recorded program featuring a vision specialist. Perhaps do-it-yourself home repairs. Selections from classic children’s books. Poetry. Gardening tips. There are 24 hours in a day, and seven days in a week. The programing possibilities are limited only by imagination and good taste.

To apply for an audition, leave a voice message at 623-933-0985 stating your contact information, your voice background and why you believe you would be an asset to KRUV’s operation.

Current Programming: All day, every day, KRUV plays music – from contemporary to classical, catering to diverse musical tastes.

Musical programming is interrupted periodically to include weekly recorded segments provided to our vision-impaired subscribers through RRRB’s audio publication: The Valley-wide Talking News. Those segments consist of recent news releases about the Greater Phoenix Metro area; Let’s Eat – dining experiences around the Valley; news from the Southeast Valley; All About Sports – local, national and international; news from the Northwest Valley; local Arts and Entertainment; Science news; Extreme Weather around the nation and the world; Exploring Arizona; local Business and Finance news; and more. Other content contributed weekly includes the latest on health and wellness.

From that same source, the most unique segments are interviews. Gary Cohen, an RRRB volunteer, conducts interviews of local people who offer their time and service volunteering. Cohen also has a weekly program he calls “Pleased to Meet” – interviewing artists, business people, politicians, adventurers – a variety of people likely to be of interest to listeners.

Mel Livatino, another RRRB volunteer, hosts an interview program entitled "Your Life." Livatino, an author and a teacher of writers, also reads segments from his works. Guy Bethell, Don Myers, Rose Anne Colavito and Marie Farmer also share their stories on KRUV through The Valley-wide Talking News.

At 6 a.m. daily and 3:15 p.m. on weekends, a program entitled “Curtain Calls” features old time radio shows from KRUV’s archive, introducing segments with historical facts about the programs.

At 8 p.m., excerpts from The Golden Days of Radio are on air, with “old time” radio shows from 1935 to 1965.

Accessing KRUV Radio Sun: To listen to KRUV, simply google KRUV Radio Sun from your desktop, laptop or phone. Alternatively, set up access through your Smart TV or Alexa.
