Iconic ‘Frankenstein’ to open new Arizona Opera season in Phoenix

Main Stage Series also includes 3 selections for the Symphony Hall stage

Arizona Opera announced the casts and creatives for the McDougall RED Series and the Main Stage Series performances of its 2023-24 season.

The new season features four fully-staged opera productions – including a world premiere in Phoenix and Tucson – and includes selections to opera veterans, those new to opera, and school-aged children.

“We are eager to continue connecting communities across Arizona through the power and beauty of opera, celebrating great operas from the classic repertoire while also investing in the future of the art form,” Joseph Specter, Arizona Opera’s president and general director, shared in a press release.

THE MCDOUGALL RED SERIES:

“Frankenstein”

Oct. 13-15 – Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St., Phoenix

“Frankenstein” will mark Arizona Opera’s third world premiere, following the successes of “Riders of the Purple Sage” and “The Copper Queen,” the latter of which was released in fall 2021 as a feature-length film. The Creature will be played by Grammy Award-winning baritone Edward Parks. Tenor Terrence Chin-Loy returns to Arizona Opera to play the role of Victor Frankenstein.

MAIN STAGE SERIES:

“The Barber of Seville”

Jan. 27-28 – Symphony Hall, 75 N. 2nd St., Phoenix

Experience a day at the opera with the premiere production in the Allan-Stallard Family Opera Series. Love, mistaken identity, and humor are woven throughout composer Gioachino Rossini’s masterpiece, considered one of the greatest comic operas of all time, maintaining its popularity for more than 200 years for good reason

“Roméo & Juliette”

March 2-3 – Symphony Hall

Composer Charles Gounod’s romantic and rapturous music sets the stage for this tale of star-crossed lovers, based on Shakespeare’s timeless play about the power of love, set amidst the feuding of the Montague and Capulet families in Verona. Libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré.

“Don Giovanni”

April 20-21 – Symphony Hall

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” regarded by many as one of the greatest operas of all time, tells the centuries-old story of the libertine Don Juan.

Arizona Opera, originally the Tucson Opera Company, was founded in 1971 by a dedicated group of opera enthusiasts. Its inaugural season featured two performances of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” in Tucson and by the 1976–77 season Arizona Opera was performing complete seasons in both Tucson and Phoenix.
