Heat deaths near 200 in Maricopa County; weekend temperatures to rise

Confirmed heat-associated deaths in Maricopa County have reached 194, Maricopa County health officials reported this week.

In addition, 351 deaths remain under investigation, according to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Of the 194 deaths, 98 have been designated “heat caused” and 96 “heat related.”

The National Weather Service reported that there is a “major heat risk” in the Valley through 8 p.m. Sunday. High temperatures are expected to be between 108-114 degrees.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality also has issued an ozone high-pollution advisory for Saturday.
