Gilbert makes glass recycling available again in pilot program

Posted

Gilbert residents can now recycle glass bottles, jugs and jars at two drop-off locations in Gilbert.

The dropoff points are purple recycling bins meant for glass and can be found at the following locations:

Residents should be aware of these restrictions:

  • Only glass bottles, jugs and jars are accepted at these drop-off locations;
  • Glass jars of any color are accepted;
  • Please remove all lids or caps before placing your items in the bins;
  • Do not bag your items;
  • All glass items should be empty and clean;
  • Other glass, such as windows or glassware, is not accepted;
  • Do not leave other recyclable materials or household trash near the recycling bin;
  • Glass is not accepted in Gilbert’s curbside recycling program (your blue bins). It can only be recycled at these new community drop-off locations.

Gilbert removed glass from its curbside recycling program in 2021 to make the program more sustainable. It was mixing into paper, cardboard and plastics during processing, diminishing the overall value of Gilbert’s recycling materials.

Glass has the potential to be a desired commodity in the right recycling system, and Gilbert hopes these new dropoff containers will provide an efficient way to help reduce the amount of waste city drivers are hauling off to the landfill.

Gilbert’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division will track the return on investment and overall effectiveness of the new glass recycling program during the next few months to determine if the dropoff recycling bins should be a permanent fixture at these locations.

Residents can help contribute to the success of the program by keeping contamination rates low. Please be sure to adhere to the important information listed above.
