Gilbert Chamber honors excellence on awards night

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce honored 19 people and groups Nov. 8 at the 27th annual Community Excellence Awards. 

The winners were teachers, volunteers, business members, public safety workers and more and were recognized by the Chamber, Gilbert Public Schools, Higley Unified School District, Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Independent Newsmedia. 

The award winners were: 

Chandler-Gilbert Community College 

Staff Member of the Year: Juan Valdez.

Educator of the Year: Sujatha Krishnaswamy. 

Independent Newsmedia 

Young Hero Award: Jaxon Glover.

Beautification Award: Gilbert Parks and Recreation Department, McQueen Activity Center courtyard. 

Geneva Clay Community Volunteer Award: Fran and Steve Lowder. 

Gilbert Chamber of Commerce 

Spirit of Business Award: Peacock Wine Bar. 

Visionary Award: John Lewis, East Valley Partnership. 

Leon Uhlhorn Chairman’s Award Presented by Strong Tower Insurance: Jan Simon, Foundation Insurance Services.

Gilbert Public Schools 

Dr. Walter Delecki Educator of the Year: Milo Hardt, Canyon Valley School.

Mrs. Sharon Orr Support Staff of the Year: Debbie Lopez, Carol Rae Ranch Elementary.

Mrs. Sheila Rogers Uggetti Volunteer of the Year: Karen Ferrin.

Higley USD 

Educator of the Year: Karen Edwards, Power Ranch Elementary.

Volunteer of the Year: Dawn Agboola, Gateway Pointe Elementary. 

Support Staff of the Year: Vanessa Weaver, Higley Unified Schools District.

Town of Gilbert 

Volunteers of the Year: Community Engagement Task Force. 

Employee of the Year: Susanna Struble, assistant town engineer .
