Desert Financial Credit Union will host free, open-to-the-public financial literacy workshops throughout the month of April in recognition of financial literacy month.

Each workshop focuses on one of three topics: first-time home buying, estate planning and cyber security. Most of the workshops will be held in-person at Desert Financial branches, while the cyber security seminar will be available to attendees virtually, according to a release.

The first-time home buyer workshop covers the benefits of owning a home, the basics of owning real estate and a general understanding of the homebuying process. It is meant for people planning to purchase their first home within the next 6-12 months.

The wills and trusts workshop will discuss how to ensure your loved ones are protected in the event of your death, the options for distributing assets, the differences between a will and a trust, and how to minimize tax liability.

During the cyber security workshop, a cyber security expert will provide attendees with best practices to protect themselves from online cyber-crime. Topics will include protecting your home network, using a home firewall and anti-virus software, password management and more.

The workshops are:

  • 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 12: first-time home buyer workshop at the Palm Valley Branch, 13200 W. McDowell Road in Goodyear;
  • 6 p.m. Thursday, April 13: first-time home buyer workshop at the Tempe Branch, 1245 E. Broadway Road in Tempe;
