Flute choir to perform 2 free shows in Peoria

Central Arizona Flute Ensemble will perform two shows of “CAFE Odyssey: A Musical Adventure” in the West Valley in October.

The main stage at the Peoria Center for Performing Arts in Old Town Peoria will host the performances at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 and also at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. The free concerts are sponsored by a grant from the city of Peoria.

Playing instruments that range from the traditional piccolo to the rare 10-foot-long contrabass flute, the seven-member flute choir will perform a variety of musical styles for all ages: classical, Disney, pop, patriotic, oldies, and show tunes. Guests will learn about the flute family, composers, and musical styles.

The flutists will pass around demonstration flutes and piccolos, allowing the audience to experience the instruments firsthand.

“We mindfully disregard the classical concert tradition of keeping the audience at a distance,” CAFE Manager Leslie Etzel shared in a press release. “Instead, we actively engage with our listeners. For example, rather than a printed program, we take turns standing up to introduce our music with interesting tidbits and a bit of humor. People see our faces, hear our voices, and connect with us, especially during the Q&A segment.”

Since forming in 2014, CAFE has performed at venues throughout the Valley, including the Desert Botanical Garden, art galleries, senior communities, libraries, the Tempe History Museum, the Mesa Arts Center, and Arizona Broadway Theatre. This will be their second appearance at Peoria Center for Performing Arts.

Central Arizona Flute Ensemble is a 501(c)(3) organization.
