Fight over gun leads to teen girl’s death: Phoenix police

Posted

A 16-year-old girl is dead after being shot in front of an apartment complex near 7th Avenue and Alta Vista Road, Phoenix police said.

Yadira Duarte Rodriguez died at a hospital following the shooting that occurred just before 7:30 p.m. July 17.

Later that night, two other victims drove to a hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and they provided information “that linked them to the shooting on Alta Vista Road,” police said.

Preliminary information from homicide detectives suggests the man and the woman arrived at the apartment complex in a vehicle to meet Rodriguez, who entered their vehicle, pulled out a firearm and attempted to rob them, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The woman then fought with Rodriguez over the firearm. Sometime during the struggle, the man gained access to a firearm and shot Rodriguez, police said, adding that during the shooting, both the man and the women were struck with gunfire.

They pulled Rodriguez from the vehicle and drove off, the release stated.

The man and woman were released after detectives consulted with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. A charging decision will be made once the investigation is complete, police said.
