Jeffrey Epstein, New York financier indicted on sex traffic charges, is dead after apparently hanging himself in his cell.

Mr. Epstein, 66, was rushed to a hospital when he was discovered about 7:30 a.m. EDT,  but did not survive.

He was arrested July 6 after being indicted on sex trafficking charges, many involving young girls.

Mr. Epstein was reportedly placed on suicide watch after he was found in his cell July 23 with marks around his neck, but was removed from suicide watch and returned to his cell July 29.. William Barr, U.S. Attorney General, said questions must be answered and he is starting an investigation.

Members of Congress are expressing shock and anger at Epstein's death.

"Obviously, heads must roll," Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska said.

His death comes the day after federal court documents were released which detailed sexual abuse claims against Epstein and some associates.

Epstein had been denied bail and his trial was scheduled for July 2020. If convicted he faced up to 45 years in prison.
