El Mirage man killed in hit and run collision along US 60 in Mesa
Posted
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said an El Mirage man was the truck driver killed in a hit-and-run collision along an East Valley freeway.
Joshua Robert Garcia, 21, of El Mirage was pronounced dead at the scene of a rollover crash on eastbound US 60 at Higley Drive around 4:30 a.m. Friday.
DPS said a flatbed truck traveling eastbound in the far right lane crossed over the white line, striking an abandoned car parked on the shoulder of the freeway. The crash caused the flatbed truck to roll, ejecting Mr. Garcia.
Afterwards, two people in a white Ford Ranger stopped to see what happened and render aid. As they were checking the scene and Mr. Garcia, another vehicle traveled into the area, running over Mr. Garcia and striking the white Ford Ranger.
That vehicle then fled the scene. Mr. Garcia was pronounced dead. The two people who stopped were uninjured and cooperated with investigators.
Detectives seek the public’s help in locating the fleeing vehicle. DPS describes it as a black or dark blue, 2001 to 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon. The vehicle will have damage to the right side and undercarriage.
Trooper Kameron Lee said traffic was clogged as eastbound vehicles exited on the Higley off-ramp and then used the on-ramp to re-enter US 60. All lanes reopened before noon.
