Doing Grief Project hosts All Souls remembrance walk in Sun City

Soulful remembrance is the intention of a labyrinth walk hosted by Doing Grief Community Healing Project 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Labyrinths at the Palms, 14808 N. Boswell Blvd.

The labyrinth walk is scheduled amid a three-day remembrance holiday Oct. 31-Nov. 2 that coincides with three traditions: the Mexican holiday Dios de los Muertos (Days of the Dead), the Celtic festival of Samhain that gave rise to the secular Halloween festival and the Christian observance of Allhallowtide.

The festivals arose from the ancient idea that, at this time of year, the veil between the worlds of the dead and the living is thin, so deceased loved ones may visit the earth. Family and friends gather to honor and celebrate loved ones who died, and to face fears of death by celebrating it as a natural part of life.

“The practice of walking the labyrinth is a beautiful way to honor our loved ones and to consider the steps we take as a time of “walking in their shoes,” said Angela Lahman, a local women’s empowerment coach and spiritual director who will help host and guide the Remembrance Walk.

Labyrinths have been used since ancient times as a walking meditation in various cultures around the world. Often outlined with placed stones on the earth, the Labyrinth provides a walker with a singular path from the outer edge of the labyrinth to its center.

Dr. Robin Dilley, an advanced veriditas labyrinth facilitator, will offer a reflection and guide the walk. Dilley uses the labyrinth in her work as a licensed psychologist and offers workshops through Arizona Labyrinth Connections.

“The remembrance walk will be a transformative evening as we celebrate the lives of our ancestors and loved ones,” commented Dilley. “It is a time to be inspired by the love and wisdom of those who have gone before us.”

At 6 p.m., participants will gather for a welcome by Healing Project director Shea Darian, a story and brief reflection on remembrance by Dilley, candle lighting and speaking the names of deceased loved ones. The event will conclude with the labyrinth walk. Participants are invited to bring a photograph of deceased loved ones to place on the communal remembrance table and a small flashlight to use after dark. Flashlights and seating will be provided. Those of all faiths and philosophies are welcome to attend.

RSVP at 602-315-8480, Connect@DoingGrief.com or fill out the RSVP form at DoingGrief.org. A suggested donation of $5-10 can be made online or at the door. All are welcome regardless of an ability to pay.
