D-backs absent on latest All-Star tally

The Diamondbacks aren’t likely to have a representative in National League All-Star starting lineup.

No Arizona players were listed in the second tally of vote leaders released Monday after A.J. Pollock dropped in the outfield rankings from last week.

The tally lists the top five vote-getters at each position and top 15 outfielders, because three outfielders make the starting lineup. In the first tally, released Monday, June 11, Pollock ranked 13th among outfielders. He's now fallen out of the top 15 a week later. The center fielder has been on the disabled list since May 15 with a fractured thumb.

While the NL West-leading D-backs likely won’t have a player in the starting lineup, each team is guaranteed at least one All-Star for the Midsummer Classic, Tuesday, July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

All-Star pitchers and reserve players are selected by a combination of a player vote and the National League manager, which this year will be Dave Roberts from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Five players who missed the cut will be presented to fans for a vote for the final roster spot.

The D-backs had four All-Stars in 2017, though none started: first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, third baseman Jake Lamb and pitchers Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray. Pollock was placed on the disabled list on the same day, May 15, in 2017 and did not return until July 4. This year, he is expected to return around the same time — late June or early July.

Goldschmidt, who was voted a starter in 2014 and 2015, is the only D-back to start in the All-Star game since 2002.
