Biden, Trump cruise to victory in Arizona presidential primary

Posted

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump both easily took  a victory in the Arizona presidential primary on Tuesday.

Biden, who won Arizona in 2020 by more than 10,000 votes over Trump, captured 89.5% of voters in the Democratic Party primary, securing 353,606 votes. Marianne Williamson was a distant second with 3.5%, or 13,968 votes.

On the Republican side, Trump captured 77.9% or 451,704 votes with Nikki Haley winning 108,108 votes, or 18.7% of ballots cast.

The results, which saw turnout at 37.08%, according to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office as of Wednesday morning, mirror those throughout the primary season as Biden and Trump had locked up the nominations of their respective parties before Arizona voted.

Arizona is seen as a swing state in the 2024 presidential election, one that could determine the next occupant of the White House. Arizona voters will have myriad other choice on the November ballot, including the state's newest U.S. senator and potential slew of ballot propositions and initiatives.

What could decide the state are independent voters who will have a chance to voice their opinion about the next president in November. Because the Arizona primaries are closed, meaning only members of each party can vote in their respective primary, more than one-third of the electorate in the state didn't vote in the primary.
