Beck: General plan amendments will significantly enhance Peoria’s economic landscape, quality of life

Posted

As mayor of Peoria, I am excited to announce that on Sept. 17, 2024, our city council approved the planned amendments to the Peoria General Plan 2024. These amendments, grounded in smart growth principles, will significantly enhance our city’s economic landscape and improve the quality of life for all residents.

The strong support we received from the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry reflects the broad confidence in our vision for future development. Their endorsement highlights the importance of balancing residential growth with economic development, ensuring that Peoria remains an attractive destination for businesses while providing essential opportunities for our residents.

A key element of the approved amendments is the new state land designation, which includes the 1,620-acre North Peoria Gateway and the 6,700-acre Peoria Innovation Core. This designation will enable us to create a cohesive master plan for these areas, promoting strategic and well-coordinated growth rather than a fragmented development approach.

In no way do these designations change zoning or diminish protections for our natural resources. Existing city ordinances—the Hillside Development Overlay and the Desert Lands Conservation Overlay, to name a few—will continue to safeguard the landscapes and wildlife that we all appreciate as Peoria residents.

With the approval of these general plan amendments, we are committing to building a resilient future for Peoria. This master plan approach enhances our ability to protect our environment while fostering economic development that benefits all residents across our city.

Looking ahead to the upcoming city council meeting Oct. 15, we will further discuss the economic development strategy for the North Peoria Gateway and explore Planned Community District zoning for these 1,620 acres of state land. Our focus on promoting retail, commercial, and mixed-use applications further aims to strengthen our local economy and enhance the amenities available in our communities.

Through important partnerships and the strength of our community, we can help Peoria realize its full potential. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to making Peoria a great place to live, work, and enjoy.
