Artists build community, find hope at Sun City Healing Project

Shea Darian, Director of Doing Grief Community Healing Project, is on a mission to provide community spaces for grievers and healers to experience meaning, hope, and healing through the arts and other spiritual enrichment opportunities. Darian will facilitate an “ArtShare Circle” 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the Interfaith Chapel for Healing in Sun City, 14808 N. Boswell Blvd.

“There are many ways to tell our stories of grieving and healing,” Darian said. “Sharing our healing journeys through song, poetry, visual art, crafted items, drama, photography, or the written word can be a healing balm for those experiencing grief caused by death, broken relationships, injury, illness, aging or any loss that causes grief.”

Darian serves as chaplain at Grandview Terrace, a Sun Health senior living community in Sun City West. She is the author of the book “Doing Grief in Real Life: A Soulful Guide to Navigate Loss, Death and Change,” a grief educator and theorist and creator of the Model of Adaptive Grieving Dynamics–a new perspective of the grieving process that serves as a compass for grievers to respond to grief-striking losses in ways that are most effective for them to heal their suffering.

“Each one of us experiences grief and loss in every age and stage of life from birth to adulthood, “Darian added, “I work to help grievers see themselves as healers who can find joy, spiritual deepening, and supportive relationships in the midst of grief.”

On Nov. 29, ArtShare Circle participants will bring a singular artistic offering to share that helps them to transform grief-related suffering and inspires a personal sense of wholeness, meaning, hope or healing in relationship to a loss experience. Artistic offerings can be original works of art or from another artist or creator.

“Research continues to verify that when we draw, write, sing, knit, or express ourselves artistically, healing happens,” Darian said, “When we gather to share the art that is healing for us, we inspire others to heal. There’s something about sharing art in a community of acceptance and care that enhances art’s healing impact.”

Those of all faiths or no faith are welcome to attend. Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing Connect@DoingGrief.com or via the RSVP form at DoingGrief.com. Suggested donations of $5-$10 per person will be collected at the door, but all are welcome to attend regardless of the ability to pay.
