Arizona, Sonora officials sign pledge to boost tourism

The Arizona Office of Tourism and Sonoran tourism officials have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on joint strategies to promote visitors to the two-state region.

The letter was signed by AOT Director Lisa Urias and Sonoran Secretary of Tourism Roberto Gradillas and was witnessed by Gov. Katie Hobbs and Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo.

“Mexico and the state of Sonora are our friends, neighbors and longtime tourism partners,” Urias stated in a press release. “As we work to build international visitation back, I couldn’t think of a better time to reaffirm our strong relationship while planning collaboratively for our future success.”

The letter was signed on Thursday, June 22.

The trip marks the first to Arizona by Mexico Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués, who has served in this role since 2018.

According to the press release, Mexico is Arizona’s largest trading partner and largest source of international visitors.

AOT stateed that while visitation hasn’t fully recovered from the pandemic, the numbers are increasing. In 2021, Arizona saw more than 2.5 million visitors from Mexico.
